Buddy, the therapy dog at Monkey Puzzle
Our aim at Monkey Puzzle West Norwood is to provide enchanting and enabling environments for children to learn in their own way, and one of our 5 main aims is to ensure the children in our care develop positive self-care, wellbeing and creating happiness habits early on in their lives.
Part of this is to teach the children about empathy, and caring for a living being, as well as themselves, and one of the ways we do this is to take my dog, Buddy into the Nursery.
Buddy is a 1-year old cavapoo and is an extremely popular member of the Monkey Puzzle Team! Not only does the action of stroking Buddy release Oxytocin (our bodies natural happy hormone), but he also creates a lot of giggles which boosts everyone’s mood!
The children are encouraged to play with him and take him for walks within the boundaries of the nursery and in the outdoor play area.
“Buddy has got the best temperament and he just loves the nursery and being here.”
“He brings so much joy to the children, who love to talk to him and take care of him. We use him to talk about hygiene and washing your hands regularly, as well talking about how sometimes we need to use quiet and gentle voices, and soft touches. The children all respond so well to him and everyone gains a little bit of confidence every time they play with him”.
“He really is what happiness is about. It is so lovely, whenever I meet parents outside the Nursery, they all say how much the children talk about Buddy.”
