From Apprentice to Head of Operations – My Early Years Journey

By Sabrina Warren Head of Strategy and Commercial Operations

With over 18 years of experience in the Early Years sector, my journey began as an apprentice and has taken me through a variety of leadership roles, including Nursery Manager, Regional Manager and now Head of Strategy and Commercial Operations at Monkey Puzzle West Norwood and Streatham Common.

Having worked at every level within the sector, I understand first-hand the challenges, opportunities and responsibilities that come with supporting children, families and teams. This experience has shaped my belief that the early years are some of the most important in a child’s life and that every child deserves the very best start.

Why the Early Years Matter

I am passionate about creating environments where children feel safe, valued and inspired to thrive.

As both an Early Years professional and a mother, I understand the trust families place in us when they choose a nursery for their child. Our role extends far beyond education and childcare. We become part of a family’s village, providing support, guidance, reassurance and care during some of the most important years of a child’s development.

The foundations built during the early years have a lasting impact on children’s future success, wellbeing and school readiness. That responsibility is something I never take lightly.

Supporting children to flourish means supporting families too, and building strong, trusting partnerships is at the heart of everything we do.

My Leadership Philosophy

My leadership style is rooted in transformational leadership and a growth mindset.

I believe leadership is not about directing people; it is about inspiring them to recognise their own potential and creating the conditions for them to succeed.

I am passionate about developing confident leaders, empowering teams and building positive nursery cultures where people feel supported, valued and motivated to achieve their best.

By fostering trust, encouraging reflection and celebrating individual strengths, I help create environments where both people and practice can flourish.

Supporting Our Teams

Exceptional outcomes for children begin with exceptional teams.

Whether I am visiting nurseries, supporting leaders, coaching colleagues or reviewing quality standards, my focus is always on developing people. I believe that when practitioners feel supported, listened to and empowered, they are better equipped to deliver outstanding care and education for children.

Creating psychologically safe environments where colleagues feel comfortable sharing ideas, asking questions and learning from challenges is central to my approach.

The small interactions often have the greatest impact. A conversation, a check-in, a word of encouragement or recognising someone’s contribution can make a significant difference to confidence, wellbeing and performance.

Looking Ahead

Throughout my career, I have remained committed to driving quality, championing high standards and ensuring every decision is centred around the needs of children.

I am passionate about developing future leaders within the Early Years sector and creating environments where children thrive, families feel supported and teams are empowered to make a lasting difference.

More than 18 years after starting as an apprentice, I remain as passionate as ever about helping children, families and colleagues flourish.
