Maths should be fun for children. As a Nursery, we recognise we play a vital role in School readiness and create a love for learning in our children.

For many adults, the thought of maths is scary but we all know that numeracy and maths are key life skills that we want our children to learn and excel at. Nursery and Early Years education are vital for embedding these skills and basic understanding. Making sure we build strong foundations early on helps build confidence, understanding and a love for learning that our children will carry with them for their whole lives.

Maths is all around us and most of the time we don’t even realise that we’re using the skills and knowledge that we learned when we were our children’s age. For our children to grow to love maths, we need to make maths fun, base learning on practical activities and encourage our children to explore the maths in the world around them.  We want to do everything we can to ensure our children

My Top 5 Tips On Making Maths Fun

  1. Learn through play- make it a game
  2. Bring Maths to life, my favourite is baking activities.
  3. Explore the outdoors, Maths is everywhere, explore patterns and numbers on the Streatham common or the front of the bus.
  4. Story-telling: Create stories that engage children’s imagination, making Maths into adventure
  5. Positive reinforcement, praise their efforts and progress. Encourage and emphasise that mistakes are an important part of the learning process
